It’s a sentiment that comes up often in this smartphone era. But let’s dig a little deeper into some of the questions you should be thinking about when you want to get a mobile app for your business.
This is the most important question: why do you want a mobile app? Like websites and Facebook pages, mobile apps have become the latest ‘must-have’ for businesses. They are a significant investment however – not just in the cost of development but also your time in marketing and promoting the app alongside the mainstay of your business. So, you need to be confident in your reasoning to get one and be confident that having a mobile app developed isn’t just a vanity project.
If the mobile app is for your existing business, make sure you’ve sat down with other key stakeholders in the business and planned how and where the mobile app will fit in with your overall business strategy. You also need to be able to describe the tangible benefits – either to your users or customers, or to the organisation overall.
If the mobile app is a new product or service in itself, to supplement your existing business income or to start up a whole new business, you need to have done your homework. Investing in a mobile app is no different from other business or investment opportunities. You need to understand the costs and time involved, and be able to plan and describe how you will release the app, what return you can expect on your investment and by when.
The next question to look at is what your app needs to do. Mobile app complexity is not determined by the number of screens – it’s what needs to happen on each screen and behind the scenes that counts.
Do users need to be able to login? Do you need to integrate with other systems or databases? What type of devices do you need it to work on? What will need to be input and what should the output be? Does it need to save data on the device to be able to work when there’s no mobile data or WiFi connection available?
You need to consider who will use your app – why will they get it, where will they get it from (e.g. App Store) and how they will need to use it. You may realise that you need different kinds of users or different levels of access.
If you’re struggling to confidently answer questions about who will use your mobile app, you need to go back to the beginning and ask why you want a mobile app until you’re able to settle on a definitive purpose.
