The second half of Season 6 of TV show ‘Suits’ returns this month. To mark the occasion, here are 10 life lessons that ‘Suits’ has taught us.

“I’m not apologising for who I am.” - Donna Paulsen

You should always be yourself and you shouldn’t apologise to others for it. Of course, before you expect others to accept you, you must accept yourself - with all your talents and flaws.

“Sometimes bitter memories become bittersweet when you share them with a friend.” - Donna Paulsen

You might be tempted to avoid dealing with bitter memories so that you can protect your feelings. However, if you share them with a good friend, you’ll be able to work through your issues and move on. By proactively tackling bitter memories, you can reduce the impact they have on you.

“Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.” - Harvey Specter

A quote originally from Desmond Tutu, it means that truth and sense don’t need to shout down anyone else. It also means that you won’t necessarily find the best - or right - argument among the loudest and most unruly.

“Work until you no longer have to introduce yourself.” - Harvey Specter

Another quote which may have its origins elsewhere, although I can only find it attributed to ‘Unknown’ online. It means that you should work hard and continue working hard, until you’re known for what you do and your profile has been raised to such a degree that you no longer need to introduce yourself when meeting new people.

When someone holds a gun to your head: “You take the gun. You pull out a bigger gun or you call their bluff or you do one of another 146 other things.” - Harvey Specter

This is a quote to keep in mind when you start thinking to yourself that you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. Or you think the words, ‘I have no choice’. What Harvey is reminding us of here is that there are more than two outcomes to even the most difficult situation and that where the rules don’t allow more outcomes, it’s time to break a few of the rules!

“When you’re backed against the wall, break the god damn thing down.” - Harvey Specter

This quote runs along similar lines to the above. Don’t just accept the choices presented to you and when you come up against a brick wall - or any kind of block - work to knock it down and keep moving forward.

“I don’t play the odds, I play the man.” - Harvey Specter

No matter what the odds are, it’s people who can make the difference between success and failure. This can teach two different lessons: the right man can succeed no matter what the odds are, or no matter what your odds are, you can improve your chances of a favourable outcome if you understand and play to the strengths and weaknesses of other people.

“Kill them with success, bury them with a smile.” - Harvey Specter

This life lesson is self explanatory! It’s not about making sure to tell people about your success or treating those unkindly who speak unkind or untrue words about you. It’s about focusing on your own success and giving them a smile, because your goal should be to make a success of yourself and not to care or want to change what others think or say about you.

“Let them hate. Just make sure they spell your name right.” - Harvey Specter

Two life lessons in one here! Firstly, it doesn’t matter what people are saying about you, so long as they are talking about you. A variation of this lesson forms the quote, ‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity.’ Secondly, it doesn’t matter what others are saying about you; you shouldn’t care about or try to change the opinions of others.

“The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.” - Harvey Specter

One of my favourite lessons! Success can only come if you’ve put the work in; success is the result of hard work.

These are just a few of the lessons that ‘Suits’ can teach us that could be illustrated with single quotes. If you haven’t watched ‘Suits’ yet, what are you waiting for?

With witty one-liners and a damn fine dress sense, you’re missing out if you don’t have Harvey Specter, Donna Paulsen, Mike Ross and Louis Litt in your life!
